''Do we have the right to harm those who cannot fight back, or is our true strength shown in our compassion?''
As a volunteer dedicated to animal welfare, I have witnessed firsthand the cruelty that animals endure, and each time I am faced with these harsh realities, I ask myself: How did we, as humans, come to this point? How did we become so disconnected from compassion that we allow animals—our fellow living beings—to suffer in ways that are unimaginable? In our pursuit of progress, we've become desensitized to the pain and suffering of those who cannot speak for themselves. "How have we sink so low as to turn a blind eye to the helpless, all while claiming to be a compassionate society?" Why are humans capable of such cruelty and indifference to the suffering of others? After all, do these creatures ever ask for more or show any trace of greed? Do they not simply need a bit of food to survive and a shelter to call home? How can we cultivate a culture that genuinely values the well-being of all living beings, and what role can each of us play in driving this change?
One tragic example that deeply shook me occurred in Telangana, India, on January 4, 2025, when 21 dogs were thrown off a 40-foot-high bridge with their mouths and legs tied. The horrifying scene was discovered by the welfare organization Citizens for Animals. These poor animals were left to die in the most cruel manner, with their bodies found decomposing in the water. Despite the immense suffering, 11 critically injured dogs were rescued, receiving intensive medical care. This tragic event is only one example in a world where animal cruelty is often met with indifference, or worse, apathy. Yet, why do we, as humans, continue to look away from the suffering of those who cannot speak for themselves? How have we become so disconnected from the compassion that should define us? It is time for us to reflect, take action, and reclaim our humanity.

A recent claim on a Facebook page called community dogs in Srinagar (J&K) a "menace" and "inconvenience" to tourists. But is this the message we want to pass on to future generations? Should we teach children that some lives are worth less than others? If all creatures are creations of the same God, who are we to decide the value of any life?
The underlying causes of this widespread cruelty are complex—rooted in ignorance, apathy, and the misuse of power. It’s a failure to recognize the intrinsic value of life, which leads to the exploitation of animals for profit, entertainment, or convenience. Whether it’s the breeding of animals for monetary gain or the casual disregard for their safety, the normalization of these practices is a grave injustice that we must confront.
Every day, animals face neglect, cruelty, and abandonment from those who should be their protectors. The urgency of animal welfare has never been more pressing, from pets left on their own to community animals suffering on the streets. Community animals, including dogs and cats, are often seen as nuisances in urban areas, with many subjected to brutal treatment such as beating, poisoning, or setting on fire. Abandoned dog mothers and their puppies roam the streets in search of food and shelter. While expensive breeds of cats face similar exploitation, irresponsible breeders take advantage of these animals for profit, only to abandon them once they face health issues or are no longer needed. These issues highlight the urgent need for legal reform, public education, and greater compassion for animals in our society.
This exploitation stems from human negligence, prompting animal welfare organizations to advocate for stronger laws, improved care for domesticated animals, and responsible development to prevent further suffering. Despite the existence of laws like the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, outdated penalties and a lack of public awareness continue to fuel the problem.
Alarming Rise in Animal Cruelty Cases in India
The growing number of animal cruelty cases in India highlights a serious failure to fulfill our ethical responsibilities toward animals. Cruelty ranging from neglect and physical abuse to exploitation and culling—affects community animals, pets, wildlife, and working animals alike and demands immediate attention.
Key Issues to Focus on:
Insufficient Legal Deterrents: The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act is criticized for outdated penalties, such as a mere Rs 50 fine for severe offenses like killing or harming community animals. These lenient punishments undermine the values enshrined in Article 51A(g) of the Constitution, which urge compassion toward all living creatures. Activists are calling for urgent amendments to the law to ensure it reflects the values of a civilized society.
Gaps in Enforcement: Poor law enforcement allows offenders to act without consequence. High-profile cases like Bruno’s killing in Kerala and the mass culling of community dogs in Hyderabad demonstrate the systemic failures in holding perpetrators accountable.
Public Unawareness and Apathy: Many citizens lack awareness of animal rights or fail to empathize with their suffering. Public education campaigns are essential to foster a culture of compassion and responsibility.
Exploitation across Animal Groups:
Working Animals: Horses, donkeys, and elephants endure harsh labor under poor conditions. Stricter regulations and regular welfare inspections are urgently needed.
Wildlife: Gorrilas, monkeys, leopards, tigers, lions, and many more suffer due to legal loopholes and habitat destruction. Elephants are frequently abused for tourism and religious purposes.
Community Animals: The cruel treatment of community animal populations underscores the need for ethical population control methods, such as Animal Birth Control (ABC) programs.
5. Tourism and Religious Exploitation: Animals used in tourism and religious practices are often overworked, poorly fed, and abandoned when no longer profitable. Ethical treatment and sustainable practices must become the norm.
These disturbing trends reflect the growing cruelty toward animals in India. Despite laws like the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, penalties remain outdated, and widespread ignorance about animal rights exacerbates the problem.
Misguided Narratives on Community Animals
Common misconceptions about community dogs—such as them being inherently unhealthy, aggressive, or unsuitable as pets—often lead to their mistreatment.
Myth 1: Community dogs are unhealthy and carry diseases: While some community animals may face health challenges, it’s important to remember that not all are diseased. With proper veterinary care, community dogs can thrive as healthy companions. Assuming that all community animals are sick only breeds unnecessary fear and leads to mistreatment. While rabies is a common concern, it is preventable through vaccination, just like other diseases such as HMPV, polio, and TB in humans. It's crucial to understand that these animals are often the victims of these diseases, not the source. Neglecting preventive measures only fuels fear and leads to unjust treatment, preventing these animals from receiving the care and compassion they deserve.
Myth 2: Community animals are aggressive and dangerous: Aggression in dogs and cats often stems from fear or mistreatment, not an inherent trait. Many community animals are friendly and can form strong bonds with humans if treated with kindness.
Myth 3: Community animals cannot be good pets: Many community animals (dogs/cats) adapt well to domestic life and make excellent pets. Their resilience and intelligence often make them exceptional companions, and denying them adoption opportunities harms both the dogs and society.
Myth 4: Community dogs are less intelligent than pure breeds. Research shows street dogs are highly smart, with the ability to understand human gestures. Underestimating their cognitive abilities diminishes their worth.
By breaking these myths and fostering understanding, we can replace fear and prejudice with compassion and acceptance, giving community dogs the dignity and care they deserve.
The Role of Community Animals and Their Benefits
Community animals, such as community dogs and cats, play an important role in enhancing urban and rural environments. They contribute to pest control by keeping rodent populations in check, which helps reduce the spread of diseases like leptospirosis and rabies. Community dogs, for example, help deter smaller pests and can even act as informal neighborhood watchdogs, alerting residents to potential intruders.
Their presence fosters community bonding, as local residents often come together to care for these animals, whether by feeding, sterilizing, or seeking adoption opportunities. This shared responsibility can unite neighborhoods and create a compassionate, collaborative spirit. Furthermore, community animals raise awareness about responsible pet ownership and the importance of adoption, encouraging people to choose adoption over purchasing pets. They can also help reduce waste by scavenging food scraps, indirectly contributing to cleaner streets.
However, the absence of community animals can result in several drawbacks. Without these animals, pest populations could surge, leading to a rise in disease transmission and public health risks. For example, without community animals to manage rodent populations, cities may experience larger infestations, which can negatively affect both the environment and human health.
Moreover, without community animals, there is less opportunity for people to engage with and learn from animals in their environment. This absence could mean a decrease in empathy for animals, especially in younger generations, as they lose exposure to the needs and care of animals in their communities.
The absence of community animals also means a loss of natural security. Community dogs often deter potential criminals or intruders, as their barking can alert neighbors to suspicious activity. Without them, neighborhoods may feel less secure, and the burden of safety would fall entirely on human security systems.
Ultimately, community animals, when properly managed, offer both environmental and social benefits, creating a harmonious relationship between people and animals. Without them, we risk a less compassionate, more disjointed society with increased health risks and a decline in community values.
Inhumane Treatment of Community Animals: A Growing Crisis in Society
The treatment of community animals in our societies is a reflection of our compassion—or the lack thereof. Every day, countless animals face abandonment, neglect, and cruelty in urban and rural spaces alike. Often left on their own, these creatures suffer silently, lacking a voice to demand better care or protection. Unfortunately, some examples of the inhumane treatment of community animals are more shocking than others. In many cities, community dogs are often subjected to brutal killings, either through poisoning, beating, or being set on fire. This is not only cruel but also illegal. Community dogs are sometimes seen as a nuisance, leading to extreme measures taken by people who view them as disposable. In rural settings, community animals often face extreme neglect. They are often overworked, malnourished, and suffer from various diseases without access to medical treatment. In some cases, they are used for labor and discarded once they are no longer of use, adding to the cruelty they face.

Mistreatment of Community Animals in Educational Institutions
Recently, a disturbing case at a law college in Uttar Pradesh, along with another prestigious institution in Lucknow, highlighted the cruel treatment of dogs, with authorities ordering their removal. In one heartbreaking instance, a mother dog was separated from her three-day-old puppies—an experience that any mother would find agonizing. Imagine the pain of being torn away from your newborns, helpless to comfort them. This cruel act of separation was an unnecessary tragedy. However, thanks to the tireless efforts of rescuers and concerned citizens, the puppies were eventually reunited with their mother on the campus. This act of compassion offers a glimmer of hope in a world where such cruelty too often prevails. It is troubling that these institutions fail to recognize that these dogs are in their rightful place. Similarly, in Jammu and Kashmir, community animals such as cats and dogs face similar mistreatment, with authorities at the universities reported to have thrown away cats from the campus, abandoning them in harsh conditions. I have witnessed these cases firsthand, and I was deeply disturbed by the cruelty these animals endured. Unfortunately, those who take it upon themselves to fulfill this constitutional obligation often face hostility and are targeted with hatred for their compassion toward animals.
'Students on any campus should also recognize that while the campus may be their temporary shelter, it is the permanent home for these animals. For these community dogs and cats, the campus is their territory, and removing or displacing them causes unnecessary distress and harm."
The Supreme Court's ruling, which explicitly states that dogs and cats cannot be relocated from the areas where they were born and considers it a criminal offense, is a crucial step toward safeguarding the rights of these animals. This ruling emphasizes the importance of treating them with dignity and respect and calls for humane solutions to manage animal welfare. Now we must reflect: Can we, as a society, rise above the need for external enforcement and instead cultivate a culture where empathy, responsibility, and respect for all living beings become the norm? Relocation as an inhumane practice often leads to significant distress, harm, or even death for the animals involved. Displacing animals from their homes can provoke attacks by other dogs and cats due to territorial behavior. Additionally, the new animals that occupy the space may not be sterilized, vaccinated, or friendly towards humans, further complicating the situation. Without proper care or regard for their well-being, removal and abandonment can cause more harm than good, often perpetuating cycles of suffering.
Carelessness of Drivers: The Hidden Cost of Reckless Driving
Every time we speed or drive without caution, we risk more than just a traffic violation. Careless driving often leads to accidents that harm innocent animals, leaving them injured, abandoned, and suffering. It may seem like a minor act, but the consequences are far-reaching, especially for animals caught in the path of reckless drivers.
A single moment of distraction or speeding can result in a tragic situation where animals, unable to escape, suffer broken bones, fractures, or even death. These injuries often lead to long-term pain and difficulty in survival for the animals. It’s not just about the immediate impact; it’s about the lasting harm that could leave an animal handicapped for life.
We must recognize that animals, just like humans, deserve safety on the roads. Every life—whether human or animal—deserves respect and dignity. By being more mindful and slowing down, we can prevent unnecessary suffering and ensure that animals aren't left to limp through life due to our negligence.
We cannot let reckless driving cause innocent lives to suffer or die; after all, we are accountable to the One who gave us the gift of life. It’s essential that we act with compassion, not only for the well-being of the animals but also as a reflection of our shared humanity. Yet, the question remains: what is being done to protect these helpless animals, and why is their suffering so often overlooked? It is time for a societal shift—one that embraces the principles of compassion, kindness, and responsibility toward all living creatures.
Tackling Dog Bite Incidents: Education and Public Health Approaches

Dog bites, especially in areas with high community dog populations, are a growing concern. Many of these bites occur when dogs feel threatened, especially mother dogs protecting their puppies. Mother dogs should not be harmed—their maternal instincts, just like any other mother's, drive them to fiercely protect their young. When a mother dog feels her puppies are in danger, her protective instincts can lead to aggression, such as biting, especially if she perceives a potential threat.
It is essential to respect a mother dog's space and her natural instincts to protect her young. Interacting with her or disturbing her puppies during this period can cause stress and anxiety and increase the likelihood of defensive behavior. Understanding that this protective behavior is not aggression but a survival instinct can help prevent unnecessary conflicts.
In areas with many community dogs, educating the public on how to safely interact with mother dogs, especially those caring for puppies, can reduce dog bites and ensure safer, more compassionate interactions between humans and animals.
The Need for Action: Animal Birth Control, Regulation, and Compassionate Society
Addressing the overpopulation of community animals and improving their quality of life requires comprehensive efforts, with Animal Birth Control (ABC) being one of the most effective solutions. ABC programs help manage community animal populations, reduce the spread of diseases, and enhance public health and safety.Countries like the United States, Australia, and parts of Europe have implemented large-scale animal birth control programs. For example, the Spay-Neuter Assistance Program in the U.S. offers free or low-cost sterilization surgeries, reducing community animal populations and mitigating the public health risks associated with them. Additionally, the Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program, which traps feral cats, sterilizes them, and returns them to their original locations, helps control wild cat populations humanely and prevents the spread of disease.
In India, the Animal Welfare Board of India and local animal welfare organizations are actively involved in sterilization campaigns aimed at reducing the community dog population and improving their living conditions.
The Role of Government, Citizens, and Religious Leaders
Governments play a critical role in regulating animal welfare, enforcing laws that protect animals from cruelty, and funding sterilization programs. They must also establish well-equipped veterinary hospitals and shelters and collaborate with NGOs to address animal welfare comprehensively.
Citizens have a responsibility to care for their pets, ensuring they are sterilized and adopted from shelters instead of purchased from breeders. Communities should also support local animal welfare organizations and report instances of cruelty.
Religious leaders hold significant power to influence society and can play a vital role in promoting compassion for animals. Almost all religious teachings emphasize kindness and respect towards animals, recognizing their intrinsic value and role in the natural world.
The Bhagavad Gita upholds the principle of ahimsa (non-violence), encouraging individuals to live harmoniously without causing harm to other living beings. Similarly, the Quran highlights that animals are also communities, much like humans, deserving of care, respect, and protection. In Christianity, the Bible calls upon humans to be stewards of God's creation, which includes animals, emphasizing the moral responsibility to safeguard their well-being.
Despite these moral teachings, animal abuse and neglect persist. Why is this issue overlooked in religious teachings, schools, and communities? Why don’t scholars and leaders emphasize compassion for animals? Why aren’t children taught to respect all living beings from an early age? These questions highlight a critical gap in our values.
Tackling Irresponsible Breeding and Embracing Adoption Over Purchasing
One significant contributor to the large number of community animals is irresponsible breeding, particularly among certain breeds and community animal populations. Backyard and commercial breeders often exploit animals to produce puppies or kittens for sale, abandoning them once they are no longer useful for breeding. This practice worsens the issue of animals being left homeless or mistreated.

Stricter regulations are essential to ensure that only responsible breeders with the necessary resources and knowledge are allowed to breed animals. This helps control the population, reduce the burden on shelters, and prevent unnecessary suffering.Promoting adoption over purchasing expensive breeds is key to creating a compassionate society. Adoption not only provides animals with a second chance at a loving home but also helps break the cycle of exploitation and abandonment.
Countries leading in animal welfare, such as Germany, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Netherlands, encourage shelter adoption to provide homes for animals in need. In Germany, for example, strict regulations on breeding and public education efforts emphasize the importance of adopting from shelters. Sweden follows a similar approach, with robust animal welfare laws and a cultural preference for adoption. The United Kingdom has seen a shift towards adopting animals through organizations like the RSPCA, further limiting the demand for irresponsible breeding practices. Australia’s “Adopt, Don’t Shop” campaigns and laws limiting commercial breeding have gained traction, while the Netherlands also promotes adoption, ensuring well-supported shelters and fewer animals in need.
This culture of adoption not only eases the pressure on shelters but also helps create a more ethical and responsible approach to animal welfare, providing loving homes and reducing the demand for expensive breeds that often fuel irresponsible breeding.
True Examples of Compassionate Societies
Around the world, several societies exemplify how compassion for animals can be woven into the fabric of culture and law. In Helsinki, Finland, community dogs and cats receive shelter and veterinary care, supported by progressive animal welfare laws, making Finland one of Europe’s leaders in animal protection. Sweden is renowned for its strict animal welfare laws, recognizing animals as sentient beings and ensuring they are protected from abuse and neglect. The collaboration between citizens and organizations helps ensure that animals are respected and well cared for. In Costa Rica, despite being a developing nation, significant strides have been made in animal welfare, such as banning animals in circuses and enhancing cruelty law enforcement. Increasing support for rescue organizations has played a key role in protecting and assisting injured animals in the community. Kenya has made remarkable progress in wildlife conservation, particularly for elephants and rhinos, through anti-poaching efforts and wildlife sanctuaries. Organizations like the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust play a vital role in rehabilitating orphaned elephants and reintroducing them to the wild, fostering a culture of respect and conservation within local communities.
India's Struggle with Animal Cruelty and the Individuals Who Made a Change
In India, animal cruelty remains a significant concern, with countless community dogs, cattle, and other animals subjected to neglect and harsh treatment. In major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow, and Bengaluru, community animals—especially dogs and cows—often face unimaginable cruelty, including poisoning, physical abuse, and accidents caused by reckless driving. In these cities, community dogs are often run over by vehicles or poisoned, leaving them to suffer in silence. In rural areas and towns, cows, revered as "Gau Mata" (mother cow), are frequently abandoned and left to wander the streets in search of food. Once seen as sacred animals, these cows now face neglect and mistreatment from farmers or passersby, who often disregard their needs.

Despite these challenges, India has seen many individuals and organizations working tirelessly to create change and advocate for the well-being of animals. A prime example of this compassion is the work done by People for Animals in Bengaluru. This organization has been at the forefront in addressing the community animal cause, carrying out sterilization drives, conducting awareness campaigns, and offering emergency medical care to animals in need.Their efforts have significantly improved the lives of countless animals in Bengaluru and continue to inspire positive change across the country.
Another notable example of compassion toward animals came from Mr. Ratan Tata, one of India’s most respected philanthropists and business magnates. Mr. Tata was a vocal advocate for animal welfare, demonstrating a deep sense of compassion for all living beings. His actions and support for various animal welfare initiatives made a substantial impact, offering hope to those who strive to protect animals. Mr. Tata's commitment to animal welfare not only reflected his personal values but also set an example for others in positions of power to use their influence for good.
Through the efforts of dedicated organizations like People for Animals and compassionate individuals like Mr. Ratan Tata, India is slowly but surely beginning to change its treatment of animals. These inspiring figures are showing that with the right support and compassion, it is possible to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who cannot speak for themselves.
Educating the Next Generation: Teaching Compassion
Instilling compassion in children is essential for creating a society that respects animals. Children must be taught not only to avoid harming animals but also to care for and protect them. Behavior like throwing stones at animals is a reflection of a lack of empathy and must be addressed early. Parents, teachers, and communities can work together to educate children on the importance of kindness toward animals. Schools should incorporate animal welfare education into their curricula, teaching students how to interact with animals safely and respectfully. By fostering empathy through activities such as volunteering with shelters or fostering pets, we can ensure children grow up with a deep respect for animals.
Building a Compassionate Society
The global approach to animal welfare offers valuable lessons that can help us create a more compassionate society. The most significant takeaway is the need for strong legal frameworks. Countries that have succeeded in treating animals with respect have enacted clear, enforced laws that protect animals from cruelty and neglect. These laws are not only comprehensive, covering pets, farm animals, and wildlife, but are also strictly implemented, ensuring animals' rights are upheld at all levels.

Public awareness and education play a pivotal role in fostering a compassionate society. In many countries, citizens are educated about animal welfare from a young age. Schools incorporate programs that teach children to treat animals with kindness and responsibility. Public awareness campaigns are common, aimed at educating people on the humane treatment of animals and the importance of responsible pet ownership, helping to instill empathy from early childhood.
Another key lesson lies in the humane treatment of all animals, regardless of whether they are domestic, farmed, or wild. Societies that treat animals humanely minimize suffering, provide adequate care, and prevent exploitation. This approach is not only about ensuring animals' physical well-being but also about safeguarding their dignity and allowing them to live free from unnecessary harm. It demonstrates how a society can evolve to be kinder, respecting all sentient beings as equal members of the global community.
In countries like Sweden, Switzerland, and Austria, animal-friendly agriculture is a priority. These nations have set standards for the humane treatment of livestock, ensuring better living conditions, more space, and ethical slaughter practices. By learning from their models, we can advocate for similar practices in other parts of the world, ensuring that farm animals are treated with the respect they deserve. Such initiatives promote sustainability and compassion, not only toward pets but also toward those raised for food.
Corporate responsibility is also an important lesson that can be learned from nations with strong animal welfare practices. In these countries, companies are held accountable for the treatment of animals in their supply chains, whether in fashion, food production, or entertainment. Industries are encouraged to adopt animal-friendly practices, such as banning fur farming, reducing factory farming, and preventing animal cruelty in performances. This level of corporate accountability highlights the impact businesses can have on improving animal welfare.
Collective Compassion: Nurturing a Society that Cares for All Living Beings
Citizens who care for and feed community animals often face significant challenges, including harassment and targeted actions from others who view feeding community animals as a nuisance. These individuals may face verbal abuse, threats, or even legal action from local authorities or neighbors who accuse them of creating disturbances or violating laws. Despite their compassion and efforts to improve the community, these animal caregivers can feel isolated and criticized.

In response, the Supreme Court of India recognized the importance of feeding community animals under the framework of compassion and animal welfare. In 2016, the Court ruled that citizens have the right to feed community animals, provided it does not create a public nuisance or violate local regulations. This judgment emphasizes balancing animal rights with concerns about public hygiene and safety, encouraging responsible feeding practices.
The Court's ruling clarifies that compassion for animals must be practiced responsibly. Animal feeders are urged to ensure their actions do not harm others or cause conflicts within the community. This balanced approach highlights both the rights of animals and the rights of the surrounding community.
Community engagement plays a vital role in fostering a society that values animal welfare. By working together, individuals and organizations can create meaningful change for community animals. Animal welfare groups often collaborate with local communities through volunteer programs, shelters, and rescue initiatives, turning neighborhoods into stewards of animal protection.
As individuals, we can make a meaningful impact through simple yet powerful actions. Providing food, constructing shelters, and ensuring access to clean water can greatly enhance the lives of community animals. If we come across injured animals, we should take action—whether by notifying an local NGO, reaching out to a rescuer, or assisting directly. Small gestures, such as offering food to a hungry community animal, can provide immense comfort and relief.
Advocating for systemic improvements is also crucial. Strengthening veterinary infrastructure ensures timely and effective care for animals. By prioritizing compassion and creating supportive environments, we can build a society that nurtures and protects all living creatures."What we might see as wasted food could be a delicious meal for a community animal." Through kindness and responsibility, we can create a safer, more compassionate world for animals.
Global animal welfare also includes protecting wildlife. Leading nations have laws to safeguard wildlife from poaching, illegal hunting, and habitat destruction. By promoting conservation, protecting habitats, and preventing deforestation, these countries help preserve biodiversity. These efforts must be prioritized worldwide to protect ecosystems and the creatures that inhabit them.
Collaboration with professionals is key to maintaining high standards in animal care. Strong animal welfare policies often involve partnerships with veterinarians, animal behaviorists, and other experts, ensuring that animals receive the best care in shelters, farms, and wildlife reserves. Communities benefit from this professional involvement, improving the quality of life for domestic, community animals, and wildlife.
As we seek to implement these practices, we must ask ourselves: What are we doing to protect helpless animals, and why is their suffering so often overlooked? The answer lies in a collective societal shift—one that embraces compassion, kindness, and responsibility toward all creatures. The way we treat animals is a reflection of our collective conscience. To build a truly humane society, we must treat animals with dignity, care, and respect.
Sterilization programs are essential for managing community animal populations, but they must be implemented with compassion. Governments, citizens, and religious scholars must work together to create an environment where animals are seen not as burdens but as living beings deserving care. These programs must be effective, ethical, and guided by empathy.
As we enjoy the Fundamental Rights granted by the Constitution, we must also fulfill our Fundamental Duties. Article 51A(g) reminds us of our responsibility to show compassion to all living creatures, emphasizing that protecting animals is a legal obligation and a moral imperative. and a sense of civic responsibility.

While laws like the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act demand stricter enforcement, we cannot rely solely on legislation to dictate our actions. The Supreme Court of India has repeatedly emphasized the need for stricter punishments for those guilty of animal cruelty, recognizing that lenient penalties undermine the seriousness of such offenses. The demand to increase the penalty from the meager ₹50 is at the heart of the #NoMore50 campaign, strongly advocated by animal activists to highlight the urgent need for deterrent measures. The Court has called for the modernization of laws to reflect the values of a humane society and ensure that offenders are held accountable. True civilization is found in recognizing our innate compassion and collective conscience.
Let us strive to embody the principles of a truly humane and civilized society, where kindness and respect extend to every living being. Compassion and responsibility should naturally guide our treatment of animals, and we should not need legal force to cultivate civilized mindsets, as empathy and respect for life should be inherent in our values. True progress lies not in laws alone but in our willingness to internalize compassion and act selflessly for the welfare of others, human and animal alike. We must instill in our children the values of kindness and empathy, ensuring that future generations will uphold the legacy of animal welfare. Schools should incorporate these principles into their curriculum, teaching students the importance of compassion and responsibility toward all living beings. Together, we can create a world where animals and humans coexist peacefully, with mutual respect and love.We cannot continue to abandon or neglect them for the sake of our convenience; ultimately, we are accountable to the Creator of us all. Now the final question is: Are we ready to reflect on our actions and create a society where compassion and responsibility naturally prevail?
'True compassion is not just in what we say but in what we do. To reclaim our humanity, we must rise above cruelty and stand for those who cannot stand for themselves."
''To the poor, voiceless animals who have been my silent teachers, I am profoundly grateful. Your resilience, love, and innocence embody the essence of compassion and remind us that kindness and respect for life are the foundation of our humanity.

Animals don't lie, animals don't criticize. If animals have moody days, they handle them better than humans do........... Betty white. Welldone kashafi and a bundle of thanks for ur contribution to the society as this awareness is much needed.
Shukriya for this profound and thought-provoking article. Your words echo the silent cries of countless voiceless beings, urging humanity to pause and reflect on its moral compass. The meticulous emphasis on systemic reforms, compassionate sterilization programs, and the modernization of archaic laws paints a clear roadmap for change.
Your invocation of Gandhi’s wisdom reminds us that the greatness of a society is intertwined with its treatment of animals. This truth, often lost in the cacophony of human self-interest, resonates deeply. The call to address factory farming as one of humanity's gravest moral failures is particularly striking. It highlights not only the immeasurable suffering of animals but also the far-reaching consequences on health, ethics, and sustainability.
